Mansik Dosha (Psychological Factors): Ayurveda classifies mental states into three gunas or qualities—Satva (purity, harmony), Rajas (activity, restlessness), and Tamas (inertia, dullness). Imbalance in these mental qualities can lead to various psychological disturbances.
Imbalance of Physical Doshas: Ayurveda believes that mental disorders can arise from an imbalance of the Mansik Dosha as well as three Physical doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When any of these doshas become aggravated or depleted, it can disrupt mental equilibrium, leading to psychological issues.
Dhatu Malnutrition: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of balanced nutrition for overall health, including mental well-being. When there is malnutrition or improper nourishment of the bodily tissues (dhatus), it can lead to deficiencies that affect brain function and mental health.
Psychological Trauma and Stress: Ayurveda recognizes the impact of psychological trauma and chronic stress on mental health. Stressors disrupt the balance of doshas and weaken the body’s resilience, making individuals more susceptible to mental disorders.
Decrease of Oja and Mansik Bal: Oja is considered the subtle essence of immunity and vitality in Ayurveda. A decrease in Oja can weaken the body’s resilience and contribute to mental health issues. Similarly, a decrease in Mansik Bal (mental strength) can make individuals more susceptible to psychological disturbances.
Sleep Disturbances: Irregular sleep patterns, or poor sleep quality can disrupt the body’s natural rhythms and contribute to mental imbalances according to Ayurveda.
Violent Food Habits: Ayurveda emphasizes the connection between diet and mental health. Consuming foods that are excessively spicy, processed, or stimulant-rich, junk food can aggravate doshic imbalances as well as Mansik Dosha Imbalance and contribute to mental disturbances.
Lifestyle Issues: Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive screen time, lack of physical activity, and social isolation, can negatively impact mental health by disturbing the natural balance of the body and mind.
